As you age, you will likely experience hair loss issues, especially men. Two out of three men are affected by Male Pattern Baldness or Androgenic Alopecia. However, there are some hair loss treatments for men that may help slow this process.
Prescription and OTC Drugs
You can use three major drugs to treat male pattern baldness. They are Minoxidil, Finasteride, and Dutasteride. It can take six months to a year for these drugs to show the desired results, and you would need to keep taking them to maintain the results.
1. Hair Transplants
Hair transplants are very common among men and offer natural and lasting results. There are
generally two types of hair transplant procedures:
- Follicular Unit Transplantation (Strip Surgery): FUT hair restoration involves removing a strip of skin containing healthy hair follicles from the backside of your head where there’s good growth of hair. This skin is removed just like a surgeon removes a tumor or a mass. The strip is then taken under a microscope, and each
follicle is dissected out. These follicles are then reinserted to regions in your scalp where there is hair loss.
- Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): In FUE hair restoration, individual hair follicles are removed directly and transplanted to the scalp's bald or thinning areas.
Sometimes, more than one hair transplant treatment may be required to achieve the desired results, but even just one procedure can accomplish significant improvement.
2. Laser Treatment
Laser treatment reduces the inflammation in follicles that prevent them from growing. Low- level laser therapy (LLLT) is safe and effective in treating male pattern hair loss.
3. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
PRP Therapy is a hair loss prevention treatment useful in preventing further hair loss and generates noticeably thicker, fuller hair. PRP injections increase blood supply to the hair follicle, which helps increase the thickness of the hair shaft resulting in more natural hair growth.
4. Quit Smoking
Researches have revealed that quitting smoking is effective in preventing hair loss.
5. Scalp Massage
Apart from having a relaxing effect, scalp massages can also stimulate the hair follicles and help with your hair loss.
6. Follow a balanced diet
If you want to have healthy hair, it's essential to follow a well-balanced diet consisting of fruits, green leafy vegetables, iron-rich foods, whole grains, lean proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Also, limit your sugar intake and consume plenty of water.
7. Reduce stress
Stress can take a heavy toll on your overall health, including your hair. De-stress yourself by engaging in relaxing activities such as listening to music, exercising regularly, doing yoga, practicing meditation, and getting enough sleep.
8. Discontinue or change a medication
Certain medications used to treat heart conditions, depression, certain anticoagulants, and some medicines used in radiation and chemotherapy, can lead to hair loss. Generally, the hair will grow back once you discontinue that particular medication.
9. Essential Oils
Essential oils such as peppermint oil and Rosemary oil can also help with hair growth as they
increase blood circulation on our scalp.
10. Biotin
Biotin supplements taken orally can slow hair loss and strengthen individual hair fibers. It is a vitamin naturally found in foods like sweet potatoes, nuts, eggs, onions, oats, etc.
11. Onion juice
Onion juice is used as a topical treatment to stimulate hair regrowth in people with patchy alopecia areata.
12. Green tea
Consuming green tea is also considered a remedy for hair loss.
