How Many Hair Grafts Are Required for a Transplant?
Once you have decided to get a hair transplant, the first question that comes to your mind may be how many hair grafts are needed for the procedure. The number of hair grafts required depends on various factors, such as the thickness of your hair, hair quality in the donor area, size of baldness or thinning, type of transplant procedure, etc. Continue reading to learn how to determine the exact number of hair grafts required for a transplant and how they are transplanted.

What Is a Hair Graft?

Hair graft is a small strip of skin containing 1-4 hairs, follicles, and skin tissue around the follicles which provides nourishment. Strong and healthy hair grafts are removed from the donor area and then transplanted to the balding area. See Also: What Is the Best Age for Getting a Hair Transplant Treatment?

How Many Hair Grafts Do I Need?

On average, 600 grafts (for minimal hair loss) to 3,000 grafts (for extensive hair loss) are required for a hair transplant. However, you can use the Norwood-Hamilton scale (for males) or Ludwig scale (for females) to identify your hair loss type and determine the number of hair grafts you will need accordingly. However, these are approximate calculations, so it is good to speak with your hair transplant surgeon for an accurate assessment.

How Is Hair Grafts Transplantation Done?

Two hair transplant procedures are available:  Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). While both the procedures follow the same implantation process, how hair grafts are retrieved varies. The donor area for a hair transplant procedure is usually the back of the patient’s head, as this area is not susceptible to the hair thinning hormone DHT (Dihydrotestosterone).

In FUT:

  • A strip of the donor tissue (containing hair grafts and follicles) is removed at once and then separated into small sections.
  • These sections are transplanted into the recipient site.

In FUE:

  • Your surgeon will make tiny punctures in the donor area to remove hair grafts (in individual units) directly from the scalp.
  • These grafts are then transplanted into the thinning spot.
